Canon Law mandates that a Finance Council be in place in each Parish.  The St. Mel Finance Council acts as advisors to Monsignor Loftus and the staff in reviewing, planning and reacting to the financial needs of the Parish.  Members are selected personally by Monsignor Loftus, mainly by parishioners who have shown an interest in the well being of the parish.  Members typically have some sort of professional background; CPA, Financials, Investments, Law, Fundraising and non-profit experience make up the '06-'07 Council.  Members are selected for 3 year terms, with the possibility of being asked to serve two terms.  The Chairperson is normally selected after his/her first term to serve out the second term as Chairperson.  Although Monsignor is not beholden to do everything suggested by the Council, it is rare indeed for Monsignor to not heed the advice of the group as we try to stay in touch with the parishioners and know their wants and needs.
